Detached Contact

Welcome to our newest guest blogger, Jackie Manley!
espresso957@aol.com

"No man is an island." Or, in these days, no man is a self-contained electronic unit. Many of us who have been harmed by other people in whatever way struggle to maintain a connection with others. It is not easy to reach out after we have been abused or have had our feelings dismissed. Often it is easier to just shut the door, crawl back into bed and pull up the covers; it feels good, at least temporarily, and helps us to avoid the real problems of emotional intimacy. But, as the Bible says, man is not meant to live or die to himself; God made flesh and blood people with a desire to be emotionally close to other humans and to Himself. We are not walking Ipods, self satisfied with our own internal applications; eventually, we get tired of our own company and are compelled by our God-given instincts to seek out another person with whom we can share our hopes, goals, disappointments and hurts. Sometimes the best we can do is what I call "detached contact': perhaps an email to a friend, a Facebook post, or instant messaging. I have often found it easier to email people in a support group or to Facebook than to actually call or visit someone in person. Electronic media is limited in that, unless you Skype, you can't see the other person, but it can feel safer and enable us to take that first step in connecting with a larger community. It gives us a feeling of control; if we don't like the reply to our message, we can delete it. We can, if we wish, "unfriend" someone on Facebook. But "detached contact" has its limits; it can become a crutch or an excuse to avoid people. Dean Martin once sang "Everybody loves somebody sometime." We will be touched by others sometime and even if it hurts, it hurts worse in the long run to isolate oneself. "Detached contact" should not mean absence of contact.

Domestic Violence Information for Pastors is here

Domestic Violence Information for Pastors and Clergy is a book that helps churches talk about abuse. October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month. This valuable tool will be on sale for 30% off during October. Hope for Healing.Org is also discounting the e-book version to $12.99. Click the link above to read what others are saying about the manual.

Inside the pages of this important manual is information about the cycle of domestic violence. The book contains pulpit helps, liturgical readings, a youth skit and other information for pastors. It may be the most important book a minister can have on the bookshelf.

Will you post the following on your Facebook page or Twitter account? It's a sure way to let churches know that help is available.

Teleclasses provide domestic violence training for clergy

Our teleclasses provide domestic violence training for clergy. The first training that was based on our manual took place in 2009 to over 400 pastors. Since that first training we have received requests for an encore and to provide a more in-depth look at domestic violence and dating sexual assault.

After much thinking and planning we have found an answer. In April, we will begin a series of teleclasses to provide domestic violence training for clergy. We will also talk about sexual assault within the dating relationship.

The course is designed to better equip clergy to help victims of domestic violence who are already within the congregation. It is not 911 or crisis training.

Teleclasses are designed to be interactive. Participants are encouraged to ask questions and are expected to be actively engaged during each session. The six-week series is at an introductory price of $35 and runs from April 6 at 10:00 a.m. - 11:30 a.m for six weeks.

Here's what your course fee buys:
  • 6 interactive sessions
  • 1 copy of Domestic Violence Information for Pastors and Clergy (Those who register within 2 weeks of class will receive an electronic version. )
  • Unlimited email follow-up
  • Supplemental material for certain sessions provided at no additional cost
  • Discounted rate on podcasts and CDs.
  • Certificate of Completion

A limited number of scholarships are available. Please email us for information. Email us at countmein@hopeforhealing.org to register for the teleclasses on domestic violence today. Payments can be proceeds by credit card, Pay Pal. Checks are welcome and will be credited upon clearing the bank.

Youth, church workers and laity are welcome to take our teleclasses on domestic violence training for clergy. Discounts are available for 2 or more people who attend from the same church. Contact us to register a group.

Lot's Wife discussion in Biblical Voices of Hope help resources

Thanks to everyone who tuned in tonight for our second segment of Biblical Voices of Hope about the journeys of women in the Bible. Our first segment about Eve was a huge success. We hope you enjoyed tonight's show as well.

Gayle and Teresa discussed the story of Lot's wife as found in Genesis Chapter 19:1 - 29. This is the story of Lot and his family. It begins as a rescue. It ends with the death of Lot's wife as she looked back at the cities and was turned into a pillar of salt.

During tonights Biblical Voices of Hope, Gayle and Teresa talked about Lot's family. To these ladies, two aspects of the story stand out that may be of help to survivors. One is that survivors should look to the future for hope and new life. The other thing that Gayle and Teresa talked about was the lack of faith that Lot's wife showed.

Other resources that were referenced during Biblical Voices of Hope include:

These Bible scriptures and others can be researched online through this link.

We are in the process of putting a study guide together for this segment of Biblical Voices of Hope. Keep watching the Hope Blog for details.

Hope reminder:

If you are spending too much time looking back in your life we want you to know that help is available. Resources that you may be able to tap into include local and national hotlines, help centers in your area and your pastor. We have two hotlines listed on the Hope Blog that may also be of help.

Delivering Domestic Violence Info to Jefferson County Churches

On Monday, we'll be delivering domestic violence information to several churches in Jefferson County, TN.  If your church would like to receive free domestic violence information contact us with the name of your church and the address (directions are alway welcome too). We want to be sure every church has the information they need.

Churches can be the first line of defense. When it comes to domestic violence information for churches, no one does it better than Hope for Healing.Org. Our website has the tools churches need. Visit us at http://www.hopeforhealing.org/clergy to download free domestic violence information for churches. You'll find pulpit helps, bulletin inserts, fact sheets, liturgical readings and lots more.

Traditionally, the Christian community has shied away from the hard topics of domestic abuse and sexual assault. There is tragedy any time violence happens within the church family. However, an equally tragic type of tragedy happens when Christians don't know how to respond. What could be the finest hour for the Christian community turns out to be a bungled mess that leaves the victim(s) confused and feeling abandoned.

Don't let this happen to your friends and neighbors in the congregation. The link above is the first step in learning how to recognize and help survivors that are already within the church. This isn't "911" help. (That's always best left for the pros!) Instead, the link helps educate and raise awareness.

The ministry of Hope for Healing.Org doesn't stop with providing the links mentioned above. We also provide invaluable training so churches and clergy can get needed domestic violence information. There is no official charge for this training. All we ask is that expenses be covered by taking up a love offering and that everyone in attendance purchase a reasonably priced training manual.

Email us at hello@hopeforhealing.org to arrange a training. Our volunteers and staff are always willing to talk with groups both large and small.

There's never been a better time or an easier way for churches to receive free domestic violence information. Why not contact us to get started today?

A church takes a stand against sexual and domestic violence.

~~Many thanks to the blog of Jacksboro United Methodist Church for participating in the Hope for Healing.Org Blogathon 2010.~~

Churches can be an important source of spiritual support for victims of sexual and domestic violence if they know what to do. Sometimes, well meaning churches fall a little short when it comes to effectively ministering to victims.

That's why we're so proud of the Holston Conference of the United Methodist Church and to all the pastors and churches who received valuable training at the Clergy Gathering in October. It's also good to see that churches like Jacksboro United Methodist Church is continuing to make a difference by speaking out in support of victims of sexual and domestic violence.

Hope for Healing.Org is one of the few 501c3 nonprofit organizations that offers free information on domestic violence for clergy. Visit our Clergy Page on our website for free bulletin inserts, responsive readings, pulpit helps and more.

Great night at Calling All Men

Tonight has been a great night at Calling All Men. It was great seeing all of the displays that were set up. We're just off the entrance and to the right of the main room. Be sure to look for our table. It'll be hard to miss the black and white chairs and terrific purple chair that the kids from Restorative Justice have created.

Our table is full of domestic violence awareness items. There are 2 different posters, awareness cards for college kids and Love is Respect awareness cards from the Liz Claiborne Foundation.

This is the 3rd year for the United Methodist Men's event named Calling All Men. This large men's revival is the only one of its kind that is sponsored by the UMM of the Holston Conference. We deeply appreciate the invitation to display.

It takes everyone to stop domestic violence. Either gender can be a perpetrator or a victim of domestic violence. This crime hurts everyone. That's why we're so glad to be at Calling All Men. Together, we can all make a difference.

Come see us if you're at the event!

Books on Domestic Violence in the Parsonage

Domestic violence in the parsonage is an issue that church leaders are beginning to address. The good news is  that only a few pastors are abusers. Most genuinely want to stop the problem and heal families. We have free resources on our website that help pastors preach and teach about domestic violence. In this blog entry we are listing some books and online resources that may help victims of domestic violence in the church parsonage.

Chattanoga, Kingsport, the Lincoln Memorial in DC and Beyond

Who am I to give an invocation and speak at the Lincoln Memorial in DC on behalf of child victims of sexual assault? I am no one. And that, is exactly how God likes it.

When I was raped while living in Chattanooga, TN in 1995, I had no idea that God was going to bring healing  for myself and hundreds of thousands of victims worldwide or share Christ with 90,000 people annually. The internet opened doors of support that were nonexistent. The sexual assault center opened later. Finally I was able to receive training and develop a local peer network of support. My gratitude remains with the pastors, counselors and friends who were there to support my family during the crisis.

Thankfully, I have never been a victim of domestic violence myself. As I met more survivors, my work soon revealed a strong correlation between domestic violence and sexual assault. In every church that I have ever spoken, in every workshop that I have led, in every crowd or gathering there have been victims of sexual or domestic violence. Their experiences very much say "it happens here". Being able to share their stories in  Kingsport at the United Methodist Clergy Gathering helped others understand the impact of domestic violence in ways that I could not convey otherwise.

Speaking out is a beginning but there are many survivors who need to hear a message of hope. The most poignant stories of survival are from those who were victimized as children. They are stories that, to be heard, need your help and attention.

When Friends and Family Against Child Sexual Assault (FACSA) extended the invitation to participate at the Lincoln Memorial we humbly accepted the invitation. This moment was shared with 3 members of Hope Youth. Speaking to the "conscience of the nation" from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial changed lives. None of us who participated will look at the world the same way. The survivors who have heard about the rally have contacted us to tell us what it means to have the veil of shame lifted that they falsely wear. We are removing stigma and offering hope.

There is much work to be done. We hope that you will join in with us to:

Check the National Sex Offender Registry. Learn who lives near you.
Listen to and believe survivors of all ages.
Spread the word of healing to others.
Sponsor the book Does God Still Love Me for survivors in shelters.
Support the ministry with your prayers, presence, gifts and service.

Stand in the gap to believe and proclaim that hope and healing is possible. We do.

Calling All Men. The Church Called. They Answered.

Calling All Men is a men's revival in Sevierville, TN. While United Methodist Men did attend the event is not strictly denominational. All men were invited.

This is the second straight year that the Calling All Men event was held. The revival gives men a chance to come together and worship. Enhancing the event were breakout sessions on different aspects of the theme "living a legacy".

I was impressed by the mood and tone of the conference. The attention to detail was perfect. From signs to men wearing vests of fire engine read that shouted "Ask Me!" it seemed that every detail was considered, reconsidered and taken care of.

The booth of Hope for Healing.Org was in the mission area. This proved to be a great way to talk to men who are interested in organization. We especially appreciate the interested in the items made by Hope Youth and the questions about the blogathon. We are proud of our kids and we very much look forward to our blogathon.

Other displays included the Boy Scouts, Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Tennessee, Tennessee Wesleyan College, the Holston Methodist Federal Credit Union, Cokesbury Bookstore, Holston Conference Disaster Response and more.

People asked me how the traffic was. The road leading to the events center was under construction. All I can say is that Calling All Men was worth the traffic delay. If you get a chance to go, do so. Better yet, in 2010, bring a friend.

Speaking at Mt. Pisgah

Mt.Pisgah United Methodist Church in Greeneville, Tennessee was one of the most welcoming churches that I have had the pleasure of visiting. I was invited to speak about domestic violence and our ministry during the main Sunday morning worship service.

Everyone was attentive and friendly. One member even gave me a bag of clothing to bring back to the center. This will be given out as needed.

I left the service with a deep impression of the depth of their faith, their commitment to the Lord and to each other.

Thank you, Mt. Pisgah, for inviting me to speak. May the God we serve continue to bless you and make your future bright.

Hope for Healing.Org People Served in April 2009

Hope for Healing.Org is now telling the world about the people we serve each month. There's a new sign in front of the mission center at 3130 W. Old Andrew Johnson Hwy., Strawberry Plains, TN 37871.

Look on the sign to see numbers of people who Hope for Healing.Org helped in April 2009. You may be surprised. Because of a lack of heat, we've only been able to be open on Saturdays. Other times are available by appointment.

Here's a photo of the sign and the typed breakdown of clients served at Hope for Healing.Org in April.

The breakdown is:
Domestic Violence .......9
Food Pantry.................12
Clothing and Household Items.......5
Angel Food ...................14
Restorative Justice (Juvenile Offenders) ...............................4
Youth Peer Mentoring...............................................................9
Crisis ............................................................................................4

The above list does not include our online totals. Hope for Healing.Org continues to be a top ranked website under "rape recovery" and "accepting Christ".

Please keep our ministry and funding issues in prayer. Without people helping us, we can't help others. Thank you for being a part of this ministry.

Gayle Crabtree Speaks to Oak Ridge District on Domestic Violence

Today, I was afforded the rare opportunity to address the Oak Ridge District Ministers meeting of the United Methodist Church. The topic was domestic violence.

I only noticed two pastors leave before my talk. Considering the tight schedules that some pastors keep I think that' s an accomplishment.

Several pastors told me that they looked forward to hearing my talk about domestic violence. This was before the meeting.

Once upon a time, pastors and domestic violence did not go together. Thankfully, times are changing. This wonderful group of ministers is proof of that.

May God grant them open ears, open hearts and open minds as they minister to victims within their congregations. May He also bring healing and health to the families that are locked in the viciousness of domestic violence.

Does God Still Love Me Christian Sexual Assault Book Helps Charity

Does God Still Love Me is a Christian book about sexual assault recovery. All profits benefit Hope for Healing.Org. It answers the most frequently asked questions about spirituality that have been asked by survivors. Victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault will find help in the pages of this Christian book.

Look for answers to questions like:
Is it Biblically sound to flee from an abusive spouse?
Where was God when I was raped?
Is God listening?
Will I be ok after rape?

Does God Still Love Me offers timely insight for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Family, friends and Christian clergy will benefit from chapters written especially for them.

Written by the executive director of Hope for Healing.Org, Gayle Crabtree. Sales of Does God Still Love Me will provide operational funding. The organization provides support to victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. Locally, they distribute free clothing and household items. Hope for Healing.Org is also known for working with juvenile offenders - many of whom are domestic violence victims.

Voices of Hope Lunch Buffet

Our guest on the Voices of Hope Lunch Buffet today was Rev. John Crabtree. We discussed what to expect in a United Methodist Church. He talked about worship styles, music dress and he went over what you might expect. The first part of the show was peppered with tech issues. After that, it was smooth sailing. We had a lot of good comments and some excellent questions!
