Domestic Violence Awareness Month October 2010 - Get involved

Domestic Violence Awareness Month is October. The awareness ribbon color is purple which tends to be easy to find. There are many ways that you can get involved to spread awareness and show  your support for survivors. Many of these are low to no cost.

This article is the first in a series. We want to help give you every idea possible. Be sure to add your own in the comments section below.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Idea #1
Create a bulletin board at work.
Staple white paper to the back of the bulletin board. Print sheets of stats onto white paper. Use purple paper to back them with. Cut the stats so that the purple appears as a frame. Put purple ribbons on the board and let office members take one. Add brochures and information from your local domestic violence program.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Idea #2
Raise funds.
Have a jeans day at work. Put an empty cannister or cup out at the coffeepot. Encourage everyone to add spare change throughout the month of October. Send these funds to the program of your choice at the end of the month.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Idea #3
Wear a purple ribbon.
When people ask about it tell them that you are raising awareness. It's a sure fired way to show support for survivors!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Idea #4
Collect items.
Call your local shelter and ask what they need. Most people think of toiletries. School supplies, laundry products, coffee, sweeteners and small stuffed animals are also good choices. View this list of items that we are collecting for ideas.

Domestic Violence Awareness Month Idea  #5
Volunteer
Any advocate will tell you that volunteers make or break events. You will be surprised at the many ways that you can help your local shelter. Volunteering often costs nothing but time. Look for our post on some of the things that volunteers can do to help a shelter or program.

AS A FORMER VICTIM OF DOMESTIC VIOLENCE, I FEEL THAT HAVING THIS & BREAT CANCER AWARENESS IN THE SAME
MONTH IS UNFAIR TO BOTH CAUSES. THEY R VERY BIG ISSUES N SHOULD BE SEPARATE SO 1 DOESNT OVER SHADOW
THE OTHER N WE CAN FULLY CONCENTRATE ON BOTH INDIVIDUALLY.
