Check out the Style Show on WBIR
Hi folks,
The Style Show was here this afternoon filming. They're working on a great story about Hope for Healing.Org and the people we serve. They took shots of our tiny little location, the thrift shop and more. Two of our Lead Volunteers were here on standby in case they were called upon. I can't wait til the story airs! We'll let you know the air date as soon as we're told.
Look for more details to come!

eBay Boycott. Will it work?
If you know about Hope for Healing.Org you probably know we sell on eBay. Not only does this provide much needed financial revenue but it also provides job training.
eBay is in the process of changing policies and adjusting fees. Nonprofits who played by the rules enforced by Mission Fish were absolved of paying fees for auctions that closed with a winning bidder. So far I've seen nothing in the proposed changes that will impact the fee waivers currently available to nonprofits.
While we aren't (possibly) effected by the changes most of the clients we've worked with will be. One of the planned changes is in the fee structure. At first glance the fee revisions seem to benefit sellers. More into the explanation given by eBay and you see a huge jump in costs. If my math is correct the end result on a low dollar item will be about the same net profit as before.
The major flaw, and call for boycott, is in the planned changes to the Feedback System. Currently, buyers and sellers can leave positive, neutral or negative feedback for each other. Ratings are based on the actual experience you have with the other individual. Those posting feedback are requested to keep feedback comments factual. The fear is that buyers will have no incentive to be honest and little incentive to uphold their end of the deal and actually pay.
In protest to the changes a movement has begun. Bidders and buyers are being asked to boycott ebay for one week. This will supposedly hopefully force eBay to reevaluate it's planned feedback change.
Our nonprofit is planning to list items again on Feb. 26. , just after the boycott but not because of it. We're trying to maximize our limited staffing. Hopefully, posting items on this date will put them in front of an audience who receives paychecks at or around the first of the month. We hope this strategy will help more of our items sell.
However, even though we're not participating in the boycott we are watching - as is the rest of the world. Will the little guy get the big guy's attention? Will it matter?
By March 1, we'll know.

Hello Stop Family Violence Activists!
President Bush’s 2009 budget proposal proposes a devastating $120 million cut in Violence Against Women Act (VAWA) funds, caps Victim of Crime Act (VOCA) funding at the lowest level in 6 years, does not provide any increases for Family Violence Prevention and Services Act (shelter) funding, and ELIMINATES the $2 billion in the VOCA reserve.
"The Administration's budget for Violence Against Women Act programs is an outrage," said Sen. Joe Biden, author of the Violence Against Women Act. "Domestic violence impacts one in every four women, yet the Administration proposes cutting spending by almost a third. If allowed to go forward, this Administration's disastrous budgeting priorities could roll back more than a decade of success in investigating, prosecuting and preventing domestic and sexual violence."
YOU CAN HELP!!
CLICK HERE to learn more and to get a toll free phone number and script to call your legislators and ask them to restore full funding to these lifesaving programs. Then fill in our form so we know which offices have been called!
If you've never called Congress before, don't worry - it's easy, and empowering too! Just give the staff person who answers the phone your name, city and state and then follow the script we've provided. They won't quiz you - they'll just take notes on what you have to say. If you want, you can also say something personal about why this funding is important to you.
Thanks for making the call that will make a difference!
Your messages last year helped secure an additional $17 million for programs to keep victims safe.
PLEASE HELP US AGAIN AT THIS CRITICAL TIME!

What a Wonderful Mardi Gras Night!
If you missed it you'll have to wait until next year.
We had a great time! Many thanks to all of our volunteers and board members. Mark Jackson is an A+ auctioneer. Terrific servers came from Trentville UMC and Marbledale UMC and community members came from everywhere to support our organization.
Bridges Funeral Home was our corporate sponsor of Mardi Gras 2008.
Chicken was courtesy of Bojangle's Famous Chicken and Biscuits. King Cake came from Gambino's in New Orleans. Seafood Gumbo came from Bayou Bay. DJ Music was provided by a local business.
We crowned a queen of the Mardi Gras Night and gave door prizes. Teens danced. Kids had fun with games.
Unfortunately, issues at the last minute that were beyond our control kept us from being able to offer the pinata breaking. Instead, kids were able to play games and grab handfuls of candy from the treasure chest.
Lots and lots of companies gave items for the auction and for doorprizes. Lots, and lots and lots of fun was had by everyone who came.
We would like to thank everyone who came out!
Planning for Mardi Gras 2009 beings now. Don't forget to set your calendars for the first Friday night in February next year. We'll see you at our Mardi Gras Night 5th Anniversary Celebration on Feb. 6, 2009!
