We Need Used Clothing. Recylce Yours Here.

We need used clothing. Can you help?

At the Hope for Healing.Org mission center there is 3 separate things that we do with used clothing.

#1 - We give used clothing for free upon referral to those who need it. Beneficiaries have been victims of domestic violence, homeless and people who are in a chronic poverty situation.

#2 - Some used clothing is sold in our eBay store periodically or at one of our yard sale fundraisers. The url is http://stores.ebay.com/hopeforhealingorg Proceeds help us pay expenses (like rent which we always need help with).

#3 - Used clothing that is not usable or overstock is sold at a low bulk rate. This helps with expenses. The used clothing is then distributed on a secondary market. Much of it goes to 3rd world countries to provide affordable clothing. Some of these places include Belize, Haiti and African nations.

Clothing may be brought to the mission center at any time. If we are open, we will gladly take it and help you unload it. On sunny days, it may be left on the front porch.

The very best day to drop off used clothing is on Saturdays. This is when we usually have help to unload your vehicle. We do not have paid staff at the Hope for Healing.Org mission center. Everyone here helps because they want to make a difference. Saturdays seem to be the days that most people have free.

In addition to used clothing, we also accept used shoes (no high heels or boots), purses, belts, baseball caps and the like. These are very important for developing countries. Pumps and shoes with heels are not accepted. There is very little use for these items in the rain forest or on dirt roads.

If you are in the area, please come by and see us. We will happily show you around and answer questions about our program. Speakers are available for your next group event. Just contact us. We'll be glad to set it up.

Please bring used clothing to our mission center at 3130 W. Old Andrew Johnson Hwy., Strawberry Plains, TN 37871. For more information email admin@hopeforhealing.org

We thank you and our clients thank you for your used clothing help!

Does God Still Love Me Christian Sexual Assault Book Helps Charity

Does God Still Love Me is a Christian book about sexual assault recovery. All profits benefit Hope for Healing.Org. It answers the most frequently asked questions about spirituality that have been asked by survivors. Victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault will find help in the pages of this Christian book.

Look for answers to questions like:
Is it Biblically sound to flee from an abusive spouse?
Where was God when I was raped?
Is God listening?
Will I be ok after rape?

Does God Still Love Me offers timely insight for survivors of sexual assault and domestic violence. Family, friends and Christian clergy will benefit from chapters written especially for them.

Written by the executive director of Hope for Healing.Org, Gayle Crabtree. Sales of Does God Still Love Me will provide operational funding. The organization provides support to victims of domestic violence, rape and sexual assault. Locally, they distribute free clothing and household items. Hope for Healing.Org is also known for working with juvenile offenders - many of whom are domestic violence victims.

A+ Angel Food and Ministry Day

Saturday was a great Angel Food and ministry day at Hope for Healing.Org. A total of 9 boxes of Angel Food were distributed. One box went to a family in need who could not afford to buy it. Neither is this family on food stamps.

It's time for the seasonal switchover! A juvenile offender and volunteer bagged up clothing in the ministry center. We're trying to make room for short sleeved summer clothing by removing the long sleeved items.

Next, we'll be sprucing up the center to get it ready for springtime! We have a lot of spring activities planned. Our volunteers and staff can't wait.

Speaking of volunteers... Do you have a couple of hours a month of free time? Would you like to make a difference in the lives of others? Why not think about volunteering? We need people for Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The shifts are two hours long (although you are welcome to stay longer.)

Volunteers fold, sort and hang clothing. Grill hot dogs, hamburgers or other such items for lunch. Sand salvageable furniture items and more. We also need help with mailouts, craft items and recycling. If you can help why not contact us? Email us at makingadifference@hopeforhealing.org

United Methodist Men Day with Bishop Swanson

What a day! All the men who came for the United Methodist Men Day Apart with Bishop Swanson were looking forward to having a good time. They were all terrific when they stopped by our booth! My hunch is that there were over 100 men in attendance. I can't wait to hear what the final total came out to be!

The Boy Scouts brought much-appreciated canned food for our pantry. We ended up with two apple boxes full of nonperishable food. This will be a help to families who need it.

As a ministry, we appreciate the help. If it weren't for the kindness of those who brought food and who support us, we could not do what we do. Thank you to all who help!

Being frugal? Saving money in tight times?

Chances are high that you are probably being frugal with your spending right now. Some people are living frugally by choices. Others are being forced into it through lay-offs. Saving money in tight times is being seen as the thing to do. But what does that mean? How can you save a few dollars when it doesn't look like there's anything left to cut?

Here are a few ideas on being frugal:

Shop thrift for clothes and gifts. A Lenox vase from a thrift shop is still Lenox.
Cut bank fees. I changed my personal bank account to SunTrust last year. Not only do I no longer pay a fee but they donated $100 to our charity. It cost me nothing.
Like movies? Think church. More churches are offering movie nights. You get to enjoy the night, see friends and you are being frugal.
Check it out at the library. Did you know that the library has a wide selection of movies that you can borrow for free? Sure beats paying a rental fee.
Take a picnic. If you are craving a day out try a picnic. Except for gas, this may not cost you more than eating in normally would. Take the kids. Make it a family day and enjoy it.

Being frugal doesn't mean you won't have fun. Saving money in tight times can help you have a few more dollars for what's really important.

Who Ministers to the Pastors?

Clergy often play a pivotal role for those who are healing from sexual or domestic violence. They are sometimes seen as the first line of comfort by survivors. Unfortunately, there seems to be a lack of support for the supporters. We have had a request from someone who has reached us online.

The pastor is asking if there is an online support group for pastors who are helping victims. So far, we've not found such a group. We are still working on it. If you know of something please let us know. We're also considering offering such a group. If you would like to be a part of it please let us know that too.

Our email address is hopeinfo@hopeforhealing.org

March 8 is International Women's Day

As I write this the headlines are startling. There is much argument over whether CEDAW should be passed. CEDAW stands for the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women. It is touted as a pact that would supposedly give women equal rights.

So far, there are only 8 UN countries who have not signed this important to work. The United States, Sudan, Iran, Somalia, Qatar, Nauru, Palau and Tonga.

There are those in the United States that would question the need for signing this pact. Don't women already have equal rights?

Don't we?

The Equal Rights Amendment was proposed in 1923. According to Equalrightsamendment.org the amendment is still not a part of the US Constitution.

Surprised?

As I write this
  • Headlines speak of a man who murdered two women and their innocent children in Ohio.
  • A friend who is a minster struggles to be affirmed by her denomination.
  • Another friend who trained to be a mechanic quits trying to find a job in her field.
  • 1:6 Women will be a victim of attempted rape in her lifetime. Source: RAINN.Org
  • 1:33 Men will become victims. Source: RAINN.Org
These are only a few examples.

International Women's Day was created to honor a woman worldwide. Some countries celebrate it like Mother's Day is celebrated in the US. Other countries use it as a springboard to push forward for equal rights for women.

In other countries, like the US, the day will pass quietly unnoticed by the majority of people in the country.

What will you do?

UMVIM Training Today at Bearden UMC

The Conference Connectional Ministries team together with the SEJ Conference of the UMC held a training at Bearden UMC. It was on mission team leadership. I have to say that this was an exceptional training. There was much in the way of questions and answers. The person leading the training took the time to be sure everyone had answers or knew where to look to find them.

One of the great things about attending the connectional trainings is getting to see people who don't ordinarily cross your paths. Most people know that I'm part of the Alaska Mission Team with Lafollette United Methodist Church. We're scheduled to leave in June. Today, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with 3 people who have been on this trail before me. Their insights were valuable and helped me feel supported.

Connectionalism isn't just one of the componets of the United Methodist Faith it is one of the best things about this denomination.

I can't wait to put my skills to use. But I will have to. Alaska is calling me first.

Hope for Healing.Org Gets Back into Service

Hope for Healing.Org is getting back into the swing of things. As the temperature warms up so does our building. Many of you know that our 100 year old buildings lack heat and air conditioning. In the cold, it's almost impossible to work. We've still managed to do client services but that's about it.

Soon, we hope to be open regular hours again. There are items listed in our eBay store that will help us meet our goal.

Later in the month, we'll have kids here from Restorative Justice. They do a great job. A part time staff person will be coming into a regular Saturday schedule and lots more good things will be happening.

Stay tuned for more great news. It'll all be on the blog.

And if you're going to be at Bearden UMC for the workshop tomorrow look for Gayle. She'll be there.

eBay Helps Nonprofit Raise Funds in Tight Economy

We're turning to eBay to help our nonprofit raise funds in this tight economy. Up for grabs right now is depression era furniture, kitchen table and greeting cards. These items have been worked on by the juvenile offfenders and volunteers of Hope for Healing.Org. They are available for pick up from our Strawberry Plains nonprofit. For a small donation (to help our volunteer with gas) they can be delivered within the Knoxville area.

Other items that are going up on eBay include clothes and knick-knacks. These are the types of things that helped make eBay famous.

The money raised will help us with basic operating expenses of rent, phone, internet etc. to keep us going. We only have 1 paid part-time staff member. Everything else is run by volunteers. This stretches our budget to help donations go as far as possible.

We'll be listing items on eBay all this week to help our nonprofit raise funds in this tight economy. You're getting good products at a price you determine by bidding on the auction. Keep watching our site all this week for great deals!

Our eBay store url is http://stores.ebay.com/hopeforhealingorg
