The number 1 question I am asked is Where Is Strawberry Plains? There is no really simply answer. Many people mistakenly think we are located off of I-40 at Exit 398. That's wrong. The exit is called the "Strawberry Plains Pike" exit. The heart of Strawberry Plains is about 10 miles away.
A few people mistakenly think of Strawberry Plains as being the Carter Community around by the high school. The homes and businesses there do have the mailing address of Strawberry Plains. But they are still several miles from the actual downtown point.
The heart of Strawberry Plains (aka Downtown Strawberry Plains) is in Jefferson County, TN. off of Andrew Johnson Hwy. Google has it marked as the corner of Hwy. 139 and Hwy. 11E. This is the address of the Strawberry Plains Post Office. Mapquest has it marked at the corner of Hamilton St. and W. Old Andrew Johnson Hwy. This is closer to the truth.
You may be surprised to learn that there are 4 counties that make up parts of Strawberry Plains, TN. This includes Knox, Jefferson, Sevier and Grainger Counties. Downtown is inside Jefferson County just a few blocks from the Knox County line. Sevier and Grainer Counties are just a few minutes from downtown.
There is more difference here than just county lines. When speaking or writing a few people like to shorten Strawberry Plains into Straw Plains. This is an immediate signal that the speaker/writer is "not from around here". Most likely, they are from Knox County or they may have recently moved into the area. (Yes, 40 years ago is recent thank you very much.)
The area is steeped in history. A civil war battle was fought here. The famous Stringfield Family Cemetary of Rev. Thomas Stringfield is here. Indians called it home for generations.
But it matters less where you are from than where your heart is. Strawberry Plains has some of the nicest people you'd ever want to meet. Friendships are formed quickly. Bonds are formed that last lifetimes. There area itself is full of nature's beauty.
That's why the elementary kids created a banner that reads "Strawberry Plains. It's the sweetest place to live."

Summers are busy here at Hope for Healing.Org. We're tickled pink to be able to again welcome Allie Crabtree back as our summer Youth Coordinator. She has lots of great plans in mind!
Allie is a 2006 Carter High School graduate. She was able to secure second year funding for the position from Berea College where she is currently enrolled. Youth will benefit from her previous experience and "can do" attitude.
She will be coordinating all Hope Youth and activities including Lead Volunteers, Volunteers and Community Service workers. Youth Groups should also contact her for scheduling.
We're excited to see what the summer will hold. When you're in Strawberry Plains come by, see her and meet our other terrific kids!

Sister Agency Truck Situation Resolved!
Yessss! We just got word that the truck issue a sister agency had is now resolved. A truck rental agency cut them a deal. They still have to pay quite a bit but the price they got is a help. Soon, Stepping Out Ministries will have A Queen's Banquet on the way to Biloxi.
Please keep this great ministry in your prayers. They do great work. I'm confident the people in Biloxi will be blessed.
Click here to learn more about them and the great work they do.

Food Pantry Demand Is Up Across the Country
Uneasy Economy Puts More Demand on Food Banks
Gas vs Food vs Medications
That's the choice many of our clients have to live with. Stories like the one posted above tell you the problem is everywhere. Too many expenses combined with shrinking disposable incomes are a recipe for disaster for many people. Economists tell us the situation won't be improving anytime soon.
I hope they are wrong.
At Hope for Healing.Org we have a new supplemental canned food closet. It's small but it helps. People pick up extra items when they grocery shop and then bring the items to us. When we have someone who comes in with a need we give what we have.
That's one of the ways we make hope happen in Strawberry Plains. But it all comes through you. Were it not for the kindness of people like you, who read this blog and act, we could do nothing. Thank you for your support!

Sister Agency Needs to Borrow a Truck. Can you help?
Stepping Out Ministries, a sister agency in Morristown is going to Biloxi, TN to minister to Katrina Victims. They do a great job. I've seen them give "A Queen's Banquet" before. It's a day of free clothing, free childcare, free food, worship, music, drama, dance, support and free Christian literature. Let me tell you, this fantastic experience and could be a lift to those who need it most.
But, there's a problem. The truck they were going to take is broken. Can you lend them one? Do you know anyone who can?
The following is what they sent to us. Read it and prayerfully consider if you can help them.
Blessings to you!
Gayle

This is a call for help.
Stepping Out is holding "A Queen's Banquet" in Biloxi Mississippi for 200 Katrina victims.
Our responsibility is to set up the Boutique and hold the spiritual program.
This means that we must get our clothing racks, shoe racks, and clothing to Mississippi.
We have transportation for the workers but we just learned that the truck we were hoping to use is not running..
We need help. We need a truck to take the equipment south. The truck needs to be at lease a 20 foot box truck (like a u-haul truck) We also need to keep the truck for a week which is our biggest problem.
We could rent a truck but we are trying to be wise with our funds. If you know of anyone who may have a truck like this we would appreciate your letting us know so we can talk with them.
Or if you have any ideas at all that you think my help us in our situation, please let us know.
Thank you,
Moving forward in His name,
Patrice Puglise

Illegal Immigrant Roundup Leaves Kids Without Parents
Through the internet and locally we help people in all kinds of situations. Last year, we helped a victim of human trafficking. She is Hispanic and was brought to the area with the promise of a job, a home and security. She did get the job. Everything else turned out to be a lie.
She was locked into a cycle of domestic violence by poverty and a language barrier. Ultimately, she fled to the home of a family member in another state. When she left, her plan was to get a job with whoever would hire her and pray she wasn't arrested in the process.
We've had several victims of domestic violence who are Hispanic. For situations already kindled for domestic violence job instability can be the fuse that ignites the flame. I'm not going to debate the legalities or moralities of illegal immigration. That's not my job. My job is to make you, my blog reader, aware that every illegal immgrant is a person. They have families, people to care for and people who love them.
Forced to live on the margins of society, illegal immigrants are the nameless and the faceless people who we choose not to see. Sometimes, our worlds collide and we must see, be moved and act.
The article linked below from the United Methodist News Service is gut wrenching. It is about an immigration round-up at a poultry processing plant in Chattanooga. In some families, innocent children were home waiting for a mom or dad to come through the door who never arrived.
The family shreds are being helped by the St. Andrew's Center of the United Methodist Church. I'm glad they are there to help and I pray that wherever our client is, she is safe.

We Need Cardboard, Newspaper and other Recyclables!
The ministry center closed in 2009. We are leaving this post in place to give other nonprofit organizations and thrift stores ideas on how recycling can help create money for your program.Help us fill our dumpster! The dumpster that you see was provided by a local recycling company. Our community really came through for us by filling it with cardboard. Another dumpster was provided for newspaper.
Staff would call for a pick-up when the dumpsters were full. It didn't raise a huge amount of money but it did bring in some needed funding. Our costs to haul trash off were reversed so the recycle bins helped us save money that way too.
Our latest recyclable to collect is cardboard! Bring us your boxes, large or small. Put them in the large collection bin in the front of our shop. Break them down - or not - as you wish.
On Thursday, the collection bin for newspapers is scheduled to arrive. No need to tie or tape the bundles. Put them in a cardboard box and dump them in. Then, put your cardboard box in the other bin for recycling too. It's that simple!
Also, please bring us your old cell phones, empty ink jet, fax and toner cartridges.
Plus, we accept the following nonworking items:
- Ipods
- Laptops
- Old digital cameras
- Scrap metal, baking pans, worn out pots and pans
- Nonworking appliances
- Aluminum cans
- Clothing
We're sorry our ministry center closed in August 2009. These recyclables are no longer needed. Please recycle them locally. We appreciate your support.
Thanks for recycling at Hope for Healing.Org. See you soon!

Hope Youth are Top Carter High Grads!
We've always known our Hope Youth are tops. Now, we have even more reason to be proud of them.Among the crowd at the graduation of Carter High School are two of our lead volunteers. Rachel Branson and Samantha Crabtree helped us set up the thrift shop, implement fundraisers and serve as leaders in our program. Lead Volunteers are youth who have completed set tasks and shown leadership potention. When inexperienced volunteers arrive to help they are paired up with a Lead Volunteer who will show them the ropes.
These young women not only excel at Hope for Healing.Org but are high achievers in other areas. Both are in the top 15 students in the class. They are members of the National Honor Society, have been recognized as Tennessee Scholars.
Always quick to lend a hand, you'll often find them helping out in their church and community. Their efforts lead to both of them being selected as recipients of the US President's Service award.
We are very proud of them! Samantha and Rachel, our hats are off to both of you!

Holly's Fight for Justice: Why Holly's Fight for Justice?
Hope for Healing.Org works locally in Strawberry Plains and online. Survivors from around the globe access our website for information and comfort. We want to offer the following as inspiration to all of our subscribers.
Holly's story is one that every woman should read. Yes, it speaks of her victimization. Her story is horrendous. It is an outrage. But, even more it speaks to her profound courage. She battled a rapist, bucked her country's legal system and she won.
Read the story. View her blog. Be inspired.

Carter High School Graduation Awards
I just came from the awards ceremony for graduating seniors at Carter High School. Impressed is my word for the day.
The cermony itself took place in the school's unassuming gymnasium. Graduates were decked out in their deep green caps and gowns. A small delegation of parents watched from a side seating section as faculty, staff and dignitaries distributed honors among the students. Underclassmates were seated in the balcony and rear of the gym.
As the graduates came forward to receive their respective awards I was struck by how hard working these kids have been. Scholarship awards totalling over 3 million dollars were announced. Recognized achievements ranged from volunteerism, to academics, athletics and more. An impressive page full of names recognized the many students celebrating academic honors.
Some of the students honored were faces familiar to Hope for Healing.Org. We had both volunteers and clients were there to step forward to claim their awards. It was a humbling, inspiring, experience. I am so proud of these kids for all they have achieved, they odds they have beaten - and will continue to beat- and for how bright their future looks.
Watch out world. Carter Graduates are coming through and they're going to do just fine!

Strawberry Plains Spring Festival Photos
The 2008 Strawberry Plains Spring Festival was a great day of fun. It was sponsored by the Strawberry Plains Community Alliance.
Hope for Healing.Org and our thrift shop Secondhand Hope sit right in the middle of it. This was our second year to participate. What fun we had!Our chairs made a great place to rest. It was the perfect spot to watch the parade. (Files are now being uploaded to You Tube. We'll post as soon as they are processed.) The Alliance placed a stage in our side yard. We were able to enjoy the music and keep up with the festivities.
The work started days ahead of time. We wanted everything to be perfect for the big day! Volunteer magic turned the trimwork on the shop building to domestic violence awareness purple from a weathered grey.
When community members found out our lawn mower had been stolen they pitched in to help! Our yard never looked better.
Other volunteers worked hard to get the shop ready. Inside racks were straightened and cleaned. All stock was merchandised and ready for new homes.
But what is a community event without munchies? A grill was loaned to us. Two great volunteers did the cooking. They did such a great job that we almost ran out of hot dogs - again! We did run out of sausage biscuits. Next year, we'll get more of each! And was there a crowd? Oh yes!
The dress code for the day included smiles. There were plenty to go around!
We can't wait for next year's Strawberry Plains Spring Festival! Be watching for updates on the website of the Strawberry Plains Community Alliance.
Strawberry Plains Festival. Old Fashioned Fun!
A resurrection of an older event, the 2008 Strawberry Plains Community Festival was a roaring success! The weather was nice. The turnout was great. Who could ask for more?
Event festivities featured music on 3 stages, a parade, crafts, yard sale and flea market vendors, food, face painting, games, inflatables and more! The New Market Fire Department handed out smoke detectors. Books were sold at the library.
Hope for Healing.Org was right in the middle of the action. We handed out domestic violence awareness information, sold hot dogs, sausage biscuits (sorry about running out!) and had a great sale in our thrift shop! When people needed to take a rest, our outdoor tables provided the perfect spot.
As soon as we can, we'll be posting photos. Many thanks to everyone who came and to all of our terrific volunteers!

We're getting ready for the Strawberry Plains Spring Festival. The Strawberry Plains Community Alliance has been planning the event since last year's success. Some of you may remember that this is a resurrection of a previous event.
Such a smash hit demanded a repeat. There will be music on several stages, craft and food vendors, education and information booths - you name it! This end of Old Andrew Johnson Hwy will be blocked off. Festivities will start at the parking lots of the United Methodist and Presbyterian Churches at about 3173 W. Old Andrew Johnson Hwy. Booths and vendors will line the street and conclude at First Baptist Church at 3100 Old Andrew Johnson Hwy.
Our new office and thrift shop are located in about the middle of the event. Our outdoor cafe will be a good place to stop and rest. We'll have hot dogs and our typical sodas and snacks. Plus, there could be a surprise bag sale that will add to the fun.
Plenty of kid friendly activities are planned during this family event. Everyone loves a parade! There will also be face painting, games and inflatables. It's guaranteed fun for all ages!
So come see us! Bring your family, friends and plan to have a great time. The festival runs from 9:00 - 4:00, Saturday, May 10, 2008. Don't miss it!

Hope for Healing.Org Moves, Expands Services

You told us we needed more space. We listened. We’ve moved!
You’ll want to come see our newly expanded thrift shop, Secondhand Hope. The new address is 3130 W. Old Andrew Johnson Hwy., Strawberry Plains, TN 37871. We are diagonally across from the Parrot-Wood library in the heart of downtown Strawberry Plains. Shop hours for the Secondhand Hope Thrift Store are 11:00 am – 3:00 pm on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Donations are accepted during those hours and on Tuesdays from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm.
We have more space and parking now than ever before! This makes is easier for us to provide the Angel Food distribution, Hope Youth and Restorative Justice programs at the new thrift shop location.
Right next door to Secondhand Hope is the new office of Hope for Healing.Org. Services provided there include voucher assistance, domestic violence outreach and website maintenance. Other services may be provided on a case-by-case basis.
In the past, many of you may have visited us at the Strawberry Plains United Methodist Church for the Angel Food or Restorative Justice programs. We appreciate the helpfulness of the church during our time of growth and we thank them for the support they have provided since 2004.
The move allows for a new great service. Hope for Healing.Org is now the only WI-FI hotspot in Strawberry Plains. Our outdoor picnic tables are a great place to hang out with friends or to surf the internet. And don’t forget the Strawberry Plains Spring Festival on May 10, 2008. Our new location is right in the middle of all the festivities and excitement. Those same tables will be a great place to rest, relax and enjoy some entertainment.
Activities planned for summer include music, craft classes and more! See our blog at http://www.hopeforhealing.org/ to keep up with all the latest “hope happenings”.

Come visit us! We look forward to seeing you soon.
